When comes to learning how to design a flag can prove difficult due to a flag’s lack of physical structure.

However, if you want to know how to do it, you’ve come to the right guide!

With our step-by-step guide to drawing a flag in just 6 steps, you’ll be designing your flags in no time!

How to Draw A Flag

Step 1

You will need a pencil and a ruler for this first step of our guide to drawing a flag.

It would help if you had a pencil because what we draw in this step will not appear in the final image and is only used as a guide.

With your ruler, you can start by drawing a slightly horizontal line. Then you can draw a rectangle on top of that line.

This will be used when drawing the flag in the next few steps. Once you’ve reviewed our reference image, you’re ready!

Step 2

Now that you have the pencil shapes to guide you, we will draw the top of the flag design in this step.

If you feel confident, you can now start drawing with a pen. However, keeping the pencil lines from step 1 to the end is recommended.

Using the pencil rectangle, carefully draw a wavy line across it. Next, draw a mostly straight line going down the right side.

Step 3

In this part of our guide on how to draw a flag, we will draw the bottom part.

This line, extending to the right from the bottom of the vertical line, is also wavy like the above.

As you can see in our reference image, it doesn’t have to match the top line exactly, but it should be of similar intensity to the ripple. That’s all there is to this step!

Step 4

A flag would only be very effective with a flagpole to hang it from, so it’s best to draw one in this next step of flag design.

You’ll also use the vertical, slightly horizontal pencil line from the first step for this part.

First, draw a few lines from the top left corner of the flag with a rounded tip for the top of the flagpole.

Then draw two lines going down from the left edge of the flag and going to the end of this pencil line. Finally, add a small rounded base to the pole to complete this flag look.

With the flag added, we must add just a few final touches before it’s colourized, so let’s move on!

Step 5

You’re probably looking forward to painting your flag, but we need to add a few details before we do!

To complete this step, you must draw a few thin lines down the flag’s middle to show the fabric’s curve.

That’s all you need to do in this step, but you can go further! A flag usually has a design, so you should add one for the flag design before colouring it.

You could find some photos of the flag for your country or state and draw them on your flag!

Or you could search for the flag of your favourite country or place you’ve visited. You could even design your flag for a country you create!

Now that your flag is drawn, you can erase the pencil lines from step one.

Step 6

Flags are generally adorned with bright, distinctive colours that help make them recognizable. That means you have an excuse to use some awesome colours when colouring ecommerce website design chicago!

If you drew an existing flag design onto your drawing, now you can replicate those colours! You can search for photos of your chosen flag design to ensure you get all the correct colours.

Once you’ve selected the colours you want, you have a few options for colouring them.

If you want a bright and vibrant flag, use coloured markers, pencils, or acrylic paints to make the colours stand out.

Alternatively, if you want a more muted, classic look, you can use some watercolours, coloured pencils, or pastels for this look.
